The story in her (Florence) book was simply that she had been giving him vocal lessons on the set. His parents paid for tickets to see her favorite singer and for dinner for her birthday. In his mind he saw it as a date when it really was just a crush.

I've heard he kissed her on the cheek and that was it. The tabloids blew it intensely out of proportion. Florence Henderson said on her website that it was nothing more than dinner and in his book Barry said "It wasn't that I sought to bed her. I just wanted to spend time with her." The date, at any rate, never went beyond a pleasant restaurant dinner. "It was flattering that she gave me any attention at all," says Williams.

Keep in mind he was 15 at the time and she was married.

Actually Florence said that she never saw it as a date and only went as a friendly dinner. She said the first she heard that Barry thought it was anything more was either in his book or an interview and she was shocked. :)
