In most radio music, there isn't a lot of focus on the bass, but it does hold it's ground by keeping the rhythm together. Listen to some good reggae like Picture On The Wall by Groundation. Reggae is ALL about the bass.

Dude .. you're the first person I've heard on Youtube get it pretty much right.... I learned it a while ago but, originally, I thought I could cheat by picking it up from here - no such luck. I ended up having to put in the time and learn it myself. I was going to post it so someone else might benefit but you're basically doing the same thing I do. Rock on brutha.

The bass is an epic instrument. It's about rhythm AND melody. It's especially important with the drums, forming what's usually called the rhythm section. In songs when it's all about the guitar, without the bass it would be nothing. The way you play the bassline can completely transform a song. I'm just covering some standard stuff here.
