  • Does anybody have the clip with Steve Chassey talking about him? Most importantly, his fatal crash?

  • @AutoRockinRacing94 ESPN never showed the wreck. All you see is Vogler's car sitting on the front straightaway, with the whole front of the car sheared off. A USAC official walks up to the car, looks in, and then backs away. You can't even see Rich when they zoomed in on the car. They then show Vogler's helmet rolling down the front straightaway. After that, an ambulance blocked the view and ESPN started showing Baseball Tonight.

  • When I was a kid one of the things I looked forward to the most was Saturday Night Thunder on ESPN. It was the one night all week where mom and dad really didn't care if I stayed up a little late. Still remember this tribute like it was yesterday. Thank you so much for posting this, it is truly priceless. With respect to the graphic descriptions.....a great man is dead, making a point won't bring him back. I understand that death in racing is just a fact, still....

  • didnt his helmet fly off in the wreck

  • You can see one of us in the ESPN footage in a bright yellow shirt. There was a fire shortly before that and the red was thrown. My dad told me a friend of his saw Rich loosen up his chin strap during the red flag and may even have a picture of it. He always wondered if maybe he didn't re-tighten the chin strap. Jeff Gordon was running second a half lap behind and Vogie was coming off turn 4 headed for the white flag when the wreck happened. Gordon was the winner but later gave the win to Rich.

  • All you idiots saying you were there, his head was in the helmet, blah blah blah, are full of it. I ran a super stock there that night and was probably the third person to him after he came to a stop. He was still strapped in the car though slid down a bit. His glasses were gone and you could see the blood flowing down the front of his uniform, I believe from his neck and head where the fence got him. His head was not in the helmet, my crew chief picked up the helmet and gave it to Vogies crew.

  • I also seen his head in his helmet it was aweful, but hardly any blood from the head

  • i saw it live also his head was In the helmet.....

  • @QuikdrawlMcgraw Vogler's head wasn NOT in the helmet. He hit his head on the catch-fence post. My friend worked the ER that night in Salem and said that basically every bone in his head was crushed.

  • they will never show it becuase of his HEAD STILL BEING IN THE HEL:MET I saw this live...when the offical walked Up it wa s aheadless body in teh car

  • @Indybowhntr ok dude your a liar.... his head wasnt in his helmet.... my grandfather larry fritz raced with him for years and was great friends with him.... we have the video tape of him running towards rich and then he jumped back over the wall.... there was just alot of blood in the helmet.... by the way.... when the cage hit the ground his head exploaded in the helmet.... the same thing happend in a tq at indiana fairgrounds to sam brand and bobby loe

  • my grandfather larry fritz was there he ran to help and richs helmet bounced passed him and walked back over the fence but from he has said richs head was not in the helmet.... so he was not decapitated but he helped hose out the car back in the pits and there was alot of blood.... if that answers anyones questions

  • I remember watching that race on ESPN, the camera panned away to show where others were running and in that instant is when Vogler had crashed. The camera returns, shows Vogler's car sliding to a halt, front gone, his helmet bouncing on the front straight. So what really had happened? Obviously his helmet came off from the force, even the fence post was bent. But was he decapitated as some comments suggest, or was he down low in the cockpit with his glasses gone? Truly a racing icon missed!
