The Battle of the Somme" is a 9/8 slow march written by William Laurie (of Scottland) during The first wrold war. He was in the battle, wrote the tune in hospital after it, and died of his wounds a few months later.

The battle was a disaster because of the tragic British losses suffered. 20'000 British soldiers died on the first day.

Some say that the confusing association between such a sad loss and a light hearted tune was an act of defiance by William Laurie to symbolise the plucky 'no surrender' spirit of the Britsh.
