Connect a 12 volt battery charger to power the glow plugs to their operating temperature where they glow a dull red after 7 seconds. It's nice to know they work before you take the trouble to install them.

  • By "sometimes" do you mean just when it's cold?

Are you going to post that amazing coughing, chugging diesel engine video soon?

You could get quite a few opinions if experienced people were to see and hear your engine video...

Even if nobody has the correct analysis of your engine, it will be fun to try...

  • 1 of my cars is a high pressure diesel and the car seems to run on 3 cylinders some times

is it possible its because its the glowplugs although i have heard they are only used for starting the car

  • When does it run on 3 cylinders?

Do you mean it is running rough?

If you post a video of the car starting and running showing the dashboard with the glow plug indicator in view and then show the engine it might be more interesting to try to answer your question.

Good sound and quality may help.

    Regards,

    c.

  • You DO need working glow plugs even though it will start with 'easy start' up the air intake. The problem is that the engine has to turn over much more to get going and in turn wears out the starter! I'm on my 4th starter motor in a year because my glow plugs are shot. On my vehicle its cheaper to keep replacing the starter motor myself than have a garage replace the plugs, coz it means half the engine has to come out.

  • turtles246011 your solution is a bad way of burning the piston rings. never put starting fluid or wd40 in a diesel.

  • Thanks! Saved me burning my fingers.

  • basically it means that one of ur 4 cylinders is not working correctly, besides, u dont genrally need glow plugs to start a diesel, i used to have a 1.6 diesel passat and the glows went on that, all u need is some engine easy start, a hair dryer, or spray WD-40 into the air intake, that will start it! After 5 mins or so, if ur cylinders aren't working, u have a fuel injection prob, or compression prob

  • its is deffo running on 2 or 3 cylinder sometimes as can feel it and see the engine shaking like mad

could the injectors be fouled as my egr was playing up

  • thanks and i will do

  • barely glowing...
