Brian, you mention that the cover letter should mention the next action that I will take. Can you be more specific on this? Should I say something like "I will follow up with you in a week to see how the process is going." or less specific, like "I will follow up with you soon ..." I am assuming that an employer may not like the idea of being put under a time line, so "soon" may be best?

An example would be: If I have not yet heard back from you by next week, I will call you to arrange a time when we can meet. By doing so, you are giving the employer an opportunity to respond, but also putting them on notice that you will be taking an action if they do not. Always keep things moving forward.

How proactive should I be? Right now, I'm applying for a personal banker position for a small credit union. Yesterday, I sent the resume and cover letter by hand to the hiring manager's secretary. I called today to make sure it was delivered to the hiring manager. What should I do next, please? I need your help.

Continue to follow up on a periodic basis (every 2-3 days) to ask about next steps. Be persistent, but not buggy. After three successful connects and no action on their part, move on to other opportunities.

Sometimes employer asks to put salary expectations on the cover letter. What to do?
should I say
Company A= 72 K/annum
Company B= 66K / Annum + Bonus
Your company=Industry standard

Industry standard. It's irrelevant what Company A and Company B pay unless you are employed by one of them and they are higher than the industry standard.
