'Neither before or since has Britain ever been in a more disturbed or perilous state.' CORNELIUS TACITUS. In 55BC the ambitious Julius Caesar, Emperor of Rome, turned envious eyes towards the mysterious isle of Britain. Within a few short years, the mighty Roman war machine had tamed the Celtic tribal society and transformed it into a province of the Roman Empire. This is the story of the dark years of ancient Britain when the well-disciplined Roman Legions faced the fury of the united Celtic peoples of Britain. Expert comment and analysis by Dr David Chandler, the former head of War Studies at Sandhurst. Authentic battle reconstructions and re-enactments, narrated by Brian Blessed

  • was that it ? wheres the rest .

  • @3dwardcullen69 True, but it was pointless to take it. There was nothing to tax - no farmland. Plus, they had to keep Pictish invasions to a minimum. The Picts were not to be trifled with. So, the Romans built both Hadrian's and the Antonine Wall to keep them at bay, with forts dotting the landscape between the walls. It didn't do much when the Romans left in 410 AD to help secure southern Roman borders.

  • @celticbattleaxe Well, to be fair the Romans launched only a few expedition into Caledonia. If they wanted to conquer it they probably could have. But it made no sense to launch a full scale attack, some far off land at the tip of the British isle. The real might of the Roman army was always concentrated elsewhere in the Empire.

  • I never knew romans had black underpants

  • FIRE IN BARBARIC Britain.

    INVADER IS ONLY THE BRETON

  • Pegentltd Julius Caesar was never either King or Emperor of Rome. In 55BC he was a Roman Consul and commander of the armies in Gaul.
