My favorite Space Marine chapter is the Dark Angels, and one of the reasons is they did in fact wait to see who won during the Horus Heresy. That and the "Fallen" are actually the first of the Dark Angels, ie the ones made by the Emperor himself. Which made them loyal to the Emperor not to the Lion. They rebelled against the other Dark Angels because El'Johnson wouldn't let them go to there beloved Emperor's aid.

@BloodiedShingle wrong during the heresy the UM were not near any of the fighting as they were to far east to be involved majorly but there was a few scattered UM forces in the conflict as for after the heresy they were the ones who held the shattered imperium together and there served in EVERY major conflict without a break jumping from warzones and protecting the human race

@dukemorran1 Yes, they "did stay out of combat on purpose" and manipulate the other Legions, the same way the Emperor "deliberately intended" for his Primarchs to be scattered across the stars by the Chaos Gods. You're just witnessing the backlash to Matt Ward's butchering of the Space Marines Codex. The UMs were a competent, if somewhat unremarkable, Legion, and they remain to this day a competent, if somewhat unremarkable, Chapter (Ward-Lore notwithstanding).
