  • @AlekseiR the Brits have never needed to catch-up to anyone on tank design. We always lead the way.

  • @WASPfreak: Isn't the M-60 obsolete and considered "retired" as a frontline MBT, just about everywhere in the first world?

  • @johnpetermalcolm: your comment about the gas turbine is a valid one, which is why I argued in a previous post that the Pentagon should swap out the turbines for diesels in its Abrams force. The power pack can be switched in this manner without too much hassle. In the 1970s, when the M1 family was in development, diesel engines didn't yet offer the performance characteristics the designers wanted. That's no longer the case; they should do the swap. .

  • @GeorgiaBoy1961 Yes dude it had rifled cannon.Yea you got your facts right

  • I was a gunner in the Chieftain! It was a cunt to get the sights lined up! The engine packs used to fuck up all the time! It wasent a very good tank at all! Thank fuck we never had to go to war in that crock! Thank fuck they developed the Challenger!

  • Whilst serving with 4 RTR then 1 RTR Chieftan was a fkn nightmare to keep on the road, it kept breaking down and was hopeless in firing on the move at targets over 1000 Metres.

However it made the crew work hard and when we got Challenger 1 well it was a cake walk and then when we got Chally 2 i thought i won the lotto.

  • @BlueonGoldZ To be fair, the chieftain wasnt that epic a tank, it was average for its age and made good by a very good crew, from what i am told by people who used it great to work on, hell to keep going.

  • Thought I read someplace that the Chieftain still uses a rifled cannon, unlike the smoothbore Rheinmetal cannon used by the Germans and Americans. Is this the case or have I got my facts mixed up? Also recall something called squashhead ammo fired from the gun, whose projectile would flatten itself against a target, detonate and thereby blow a giant spall off on the inside of the enemy tank, destroying it. The Chieftain could also fire conventional HE, APFSDS, etc.
