Author Eve Ensler discusses the origin of the "Free Barbie" story from her latest book I Am an Emotional Creature. Ensler says the story of Barbie, from manufacturing plant to toy box, is a metaphor for everything wrong with the world today.

-----

Since creating her groundbreaking first work, The Vagina Monologues, Ensler and the performers she inspired have grown into nothing less than a global movement.

A best-selling author, award-winning playwright and anti-violence activist, Ensler has been the voice for women and girls across the globe for over a decade. In this conversation with author Daniel Handler, she reveals the daily struggles faced by modern women around the world. - Commonwealth Club of California

Eve Ensler is the award-winning author of The Vagina Monologues. The Vagina Monologues has been translated into over 45 languages and is running in theaters all over the world, including sold-out runs at both Off-Broadway's Westside Theater and on London's West End (2002 Olivier Award nomination, Best Entertainment.)

Ms. Ensler has devoted her life to stopping violence, envisioning a planet in which women and girls will be free to thrive, rather than merely survive. The Vagina Monologues is based on Ensler's interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace, the piece celebrates women's sexuality and strength.

Ms. Ensler is the recipient of many awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship Award in Playwriting, the Berrilla-Kerr Award for Playwriting, the Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Solo Performance, and the Jury Award for Theater at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, as well as the 2002 Amnesty International Media Spotlight Award for Leadership and The Matrix Award (2002).

She has received numerous Honorary degrees, including Doctor of Letters from her alma mater, Middlebury College.

  • I thought I was the only one who would do terrible things to Barbie.

My grandparents kept giving them to me, I would burn them or cut them up among other things.

I believe my favourite toys at the time were Darth Maul and Optimus Prime. Which according to another ForaTV video means I should have grown up to be gay.

    Phht, no.

  • yea, i must be RETADED...

  • kick Barbie's mouth, fuck this bitch

  • i thought this was a song.............

  • Eve... IT'S A FUCKING TOY.

  • @nathanhouseman Barbie is an object not a real person. Its clear that no girl could exist like Barbie due to the unrealistic and the unattainable image she is. Plus Barbie is basically shallow, materialistic and a grotesque figure of what womanhood is about. Its more than clothes, make-up and boyfriends...

  • @patsybob You may judge Barbie and the so-called "whore outfits" she wears, but that NEVER gives you the right to therefore imply she somehow DESERVES to be objectified! Get enlightened.

  • I used to give Ken and Barbie nose jobs. Basically cut each other's nose off and switch 'em. What could that mean? lol

  • ahahahah she said Japan!

  • @cfw8908 yeah but barbie is a paradox, you know how many whore outfits barbie has worn across the years, the lack of ethnic minority barbies so its only for white girls, the racist "oreo" barbie that was black definetly hinted at racist remarks being compared to a white in the inside black outside like an oreo biscuit, the phrase talking barbie said " Maths is hard!" isnt very motivating as results show girls find maths more difficult than males. The fact shes a pretty, thin, blonde fashion girl !

  • I read Daniel Handler's name on the screen and shit my pants. Anyway, my parents never believed in male dolls, so I always had just Barbies. Wasn't too creative with my usage of them, though. They were just always naked.
