What a sorry sight this was when I first came across it about 2 weeks ago, and I got my new camcorder the other day so went for a walk, and it was still there, so I filmed it!!! I want this boat myself, but haven't the money, but you can always dream!!! The other two boats, the white cruisers, looked like they had been gutted, aswell as scuttled as the far one was full of water and listing badly, so presumably it was sat on the bottom of the canal. So, the moral of the story is, if you love your boat, pay your fees, look after your boat, and don't abandon it!!! There was still Weetabix in there for goodness sake!!! :(

UPDATE: I have just been told about this boat's past, the owner had been having financial problems prior to British Waterways taking it, and had to give up the boat as he could no longer afford to run it. It's sad to hear about this, but that's what happens if you make a rash decision to venture into this sort of thing... :(

  • Serves them just right - its justice for the rest of us. I struggle to pay my licence and mooring fees but its my contribution to the overall upkeep of the system. Without it there is no waterway system. I am sick of freeloading selfish scum who sponge off the rest of us hardworking honest folk. BW would have given them ample warning and multiple chances to pay their fees. WELL DONE BW !

  • @elrobbo31

But if you think about it logically, BW leave a lot of boats to be trashed and vandalised, so when they come to auction them off, then they lose a lot of money, not to mention when they have to remove the fibreglass boats, it costs them more to remove and break up than it does to sell them to someone who would want to buy them up.

So, BW fail miserably in their debt recovery system, it's no wonder they've been removed as a government body...

  • narrowboat people love cast iron stoves - FACT!

  • @speckog

Well that's just stating the obvious... :P

  • More of this is required. there are many boats not paying the true licence, no licenced or overstaying on moorings without paying. You get a ticket on your car and can get towed away in a lot less time than a section 8 notice gives you. After 45 years on the waterways I can tell you proper paying boaters are pissed off with these types. Many of te boats are in such a bad state that they cannot get a BSS or insurance, hence BW takes appropiate action.

And let's say you lost your job, you can't find work, thus can't afford to run everything, so you sell your house, you move onto the boat, you still can't find work, then you end up unable to pay for the licence on the boat, then you're in the same category as a lot of people in poverty, think what it is to be like in that situation, imagine yourself in their shoes, then imagine your only home with your remaining belongings being taken away from you, it's not charity, it's life...

  • @suej3169

Well, the former owner of the boat had no house, the boat was his home, he had no choice but to live on it, if you lost your boat, you still have a home to go to, if you're not a liveaboard, then boat ownership is a luxury, as is owning a car and a house, so to complain about having no money to pay for other people using something you don't need, think about those who aren't as well-off, who have little or no choice, a lot of boats are people's homes, not leisure craft like some...

  • @suej3169

Priorities, to me priorities are about keeping yourself fed, clothed and sheltered, owning a boat is not a priority, it is a luxury, so to say you haven't got any luxuries is rubbish...

Just out of curiosity, do you pay council tax? If not, then you don't have the right to use public services, a lot of boaters who think that they don't need to pay because they live on the water use such services, but we landlubbers have to pay more for these people, so it swings both ways... ;)

  • From this side of the "pond", it appears that UK folk are taxed to the hilt, and what's left is to be doled out in various "fees". I'll bet there's even a "breathing tax" over there. And what do you get when you hand over your hard earned money to "them" ? Absolutely nothing. Much different in the South of France, according to the numerous ex-pats I've talked to there....
