Oistrakh was one of the truly great musicians of the 20th Century. His interpretations have an artistic maturity that plumb the depths of the soul. He could have come to the West and been wealthy. Out of loyalty to and love of his homeland, he became a servant of the Soviet government and lived on a salary. They worked him mercilessly and he shouldered the burden without any complaining, though he apologized to many of his colleagues (Shostakovich) for their harsh treatment.
