The small mountain pine beetle that has already eaten its way through about nine million hectares of pine forest in British Columbia with devastating environmental and economic impact is developing new appetites. Since 1993 the pine beetle has unleashed an unprecedented natural disaster destroying about 40 per cent of the province's lodgepole pine, the pine beetle is now killing spruce trees as well.

  • This is crazy, the pines are dying but that will give more opportunity to shrubs, grass and deer. Less trees will mean less insects also. Nature is not a garden you need to keep. You are exaggerating, an epidemic of pine tree beetles killing a large percentage of the pine trees is not going to kill the ecosystem as a whole and probably a lot of wildlife and plants will flourish when more sunlight reaches the bottom. Also other tree species will get more of a chance to replace the pine trees.

  • A friend and I drove through to Pentiction then up to Williams Lake in late May.

For hours we were speechless and nothing has been on the news. We couldn't believe the dead trees and the slides~! you are right about the fires! thank you for sharing and I am posting this to Facebook!

  • Wow! What a compelling story! I see your point about the destruction due to these pine beetles. Yet, government as usual, favors *profitable* industries rather than preserve nature... It's exploitation. And I admire you for speaking out about it. And the many animals that would loose their woodland homes. My guess is the cattle ranch would make out fine. And later contend that whatever wildlife has survived is a threat to thier "livestock". Preserve the forest for us & the animals- Go Vegan
