Teddy Rosevelt started the progressive movement. In fact when he ran for a second term against the republican Taft who he considered to conservative, he ran on the progressive party ticket.

Modern republicans including John McCain are progressives just like democrats. They vote the same in congress 98% of the time. Conservative racism (freedom & democracy as the founders made it but for whites only) is all but dead, replaced by the liberal racism of national socialism.
