The Hospital De La Santa Creu i Sant Pau was founded in 1401, when six hospitals in the city merged, forming the Hospital De La Santa Creu. "Sant Pau" was added to that name to honour the wishes of building benefactor, Pau Gil. The hospital was designed by the Catalan architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner. It is considered as one of the most significant buildings in Catalan modernisme. It is listed also on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
