i also love the sort of "indifference" they portray Valjean having towards javert, while Javert makes the hunting down of Valjean validate his entire being. It just goes to show the entire "conflict" between the two is only really important to Javert. it's tragic...but you see this many times in real life. Someone creating a whole fantasy world in their head, where they convince themselves of conflicts that don't actually exist.

Superb acting and singing. Totally enthralled.

In Javert's mind, he cannot live in a world where the very foundations he has built his entire being on (those of strict justice, black and white upholding of the law), are thrown into doubt. In one last ironic moment, he feels himself "beaten" by Jean Valjean, still portraying the latter as an evil...when in reality Jean Valjean has always strayed to the side of kindness. Ironically, it is this adherence to all that is "good", that causes Jean Valjean to inspire Javert's suicide. Tragic.

That right there, is an actor. The way he moves, how he stares off, even the way he carries himself. He could have just stood there and sung, but no. He put his whole damn soul into this. That's a true art. Beautiful.

I just hope Russell Crowe can do this part justice. He has a hard act to follow after this Awesome performance and in my opinion the best Javert ever.

A little known fact is that when the production first went to Japan, the guys who played Valjean and Javert actually played both roles and would alternate each night.

Javert vs Val'Jean ...
Ultimate battle of Mercy vs Justice ...
Mercy wins, but Justice tries to redeem itself through restitution.
Philip Quast was the first person who made me understand Javert.
