CIA NAZI in USA is like the HIV AIDS virus, psychopathic murderers in your most highly secretive defense agency is a formula for a worldwide nightmare. The CIA has very little oversight from other government agencies, therefore they can get away with all kinds of killings and crimes, and just tell congress or the president or the citizens "Its national security, cant tell you anything". The USA still has NAZI in the CIA, we are in worse shape than most people can imagine.

When the Soviet Union was next door we didn't join some pact to feel secure.

Btw, there's no point in attacking a neutral country, but if there was I think the Germans and other Scandinavians would be more than enough. All EU countries are not going to just watch.

You are forgetting something very important. All those empires you mention collapsed. When it came to Rome and the British empire their greed and constant doublecrossing of other nations led to their collapse.
