"A Trick of the Light", song from The Triffids album "Calenture", 1987.
Lyrics to A Trick Of The Light :
I have a letter. familiar paper I keep a figurine in a locket It's dedicated, engraved initials Yellow photograph in a pocketbook
Well the rim of her mouth was golden Her eyes were just desert sands But that's not her! That's just the light It's only an image of her It's just a trick of the light
She sent me letters, gave me directions Name of the street where I should turn And then she stood out front, wrapped in her bathtowel Yelling, "Once you leave boy, you can't return!"
I was beating on her like an anvil Beating her out of original shape With that same old panic caught on her face I copied the image of the ancient embrace
You remind me very much Of someone that I used to know We used to take turns crying all night Oh, but that was so long ago now

The thing to remember is this is not Australian music, its Western Australian music the rest of the country would be lost without us. (AC DC is also WA)
It doesn't matter how old you are. It's the music that counts. To be honest I don't understand why people under 20 feel the need to say how old they are and then justify listening to music that isn't on radio 1. I love 80's indie but only got into these guys 4 years ago............It's amazing, Aussies can actually make music that isn't a joke :-)
well i for one really love this version and listened to it all through out my childhood. obviously i still listen to it because it's a wonderful song and just because I'm 16 doesn't mean my opinions are worthless. ( I'm not sure but maybe people would think that which is why I'm making the preemptive strike) I'm not trying to be hostile it's just my point of view. anyway thanks juliesmil for putting this up I'm thinking of using the lyrics of this song for my homework comparing it to poetry.
davidscalling I think the version Of Trick Of The Light your thinking of is the slightly earlier and much better version on a record called in the pines. I find this version a little over produced. great genuinely underrated band
sirlordcomic, I think you are right about this being overproduced (or something). I find this version slightly flat and uninspireing. Not at all what I remember. But the video I saw was from around 1988 so I am not sure if it was from an earlier version.
The "in the pines" version was so under produced I am amazed it got onto the tape at all. But it is most probably more quintessentially the real triffids vibe, they were more into clean and more raw sounds, especially when they played live.
