Timing chain guide ccheck the top one underneath valve cover. I have the same motor does it eventually stop because lack of oil pressure can cuase the chain tensioner to not fully tighten ijs good luck

my s15 did the same thing n then it got worse n worse and the engines seized lol

this is what my 2000 Ford Ranger 3.0l v6 sounds like and thought it was a piece of the injector came off or the something with the rod baring than someone else said it was part of the crankshaft or the camshaft and we need help figuring ouyt the problem

Its the cams.. vct cams just fuk out,, if you get vct cams gears its too expensive so replace it with a non vct ones from a bluebird or primera or somthing... hope this helps

hydraulic lifters ?
May not be rod knock, sounds to consistant to be rod knock. look up videos on youtube with s14 sr's with bad vct gears. or look up vct rattle.

Yeah it's been rebuilt now, it turns out it was a small piece of stainless from the exhaust manifold (which cracked) that had somehow gotten sucked into a cylinder and was stuck to the top of a piston. The noise was the piston ramming the stainless into the top of the cylinder. Luckily it did not move from there and did no real damage (apart from the $4000 to strip down and rebuild the engine, but at least I now have new rings/bearings/etc).
