Peak Moment 177: Dave Gardner's upcoming documentary looks at modern society and asks, why are we behaving irrationally? There's overwhelming evidence we've reached the limits to growth, yet continue in our addiction to it. In a search for the cure, Dave starts with the need to tell different stories and shares examples from several folks he's interviewed. He highlights an amusing segment which depicts a family's impacts remaining in their yard! This "crowd-produced" film will also show activities at the community level which could make a huge positive difference.
@acavideo Thank you for recognizing the importance of this film. And we are trying our best to create a new kind of film that does get more attention from the mainstream. You'll appreciate the humor about getting the right people to see it in our fun video on Kickstarter. In fact, we need people like you to support the project there and spread the word about it. What is more "fun" for me is NOT to " know my kids", since I do not have any. I have stopped and smelled the roses all of my life, and I am 60. Going to Cabo once or twice a year WOULD be fun for me, but not with an average companion. I need a companion who is truly amazed by natural life: ocean life, weather, animals, quiet culture and not commercialism. Some people never reproduced because decades ago, we saw what a mess was headed our way, and decided we did not want to subject kids to that.

@deskset24 well mathematically analyze the end result of any system that uses interest, and credit. I agree some subjective moral doctorine on economics is not proven, but in fact I would argue that it, and all other forms have failed, to serve the people as a whole, sure it serves a few, the few who generally construct it, but none have serve man.

@d3adp001 At times in the past, I've been an engineer, a teacher, a biotechnician, a linguist. But, I gave all that up - sacrificed it - to be a mathematician now, with a payoff far greater than the loss of knowledge in those other fields.

Reading some of the posts here, I am mentally losing track of who is who: TheDudeRulez09 vs d3adp001. Never mind.
A more useful concept than "unity" would be: GLOBALLY OPTIMAL. By "globally", I don't mean "for planet earth". I mean, optimal "over the world or set of all choices taking into account all variables". To what degree people need to be FORCED to "work together" to achieve this, I don't know. But, it has NOT been proven that just dumb random Adam Smith economics is optimal.

@TheDudeRulez09 HOORAY! Everything else is trivial compared to not eating meat, in terms of its effect. Eating meat DIRECTLY causes UNIMAGINABLE torture for billions of animals, whereas, for example, global warming, while real & serious & caused by humans, it canNOT be proven with 100% certainty that it inflicts pain on any particular person of similar intensity as a factory farm does on animals.

@mythic89 I THOUGHT you might be sarcastic with your first post, but by your 4th, I'm not so sure.
40 min showers: wouldn't that make you an extreme anti-germ-freak? A pussy afraid of a little dirt?
