@TheRealAdamT There were 3 people who wrote this song - Anne Preven & Scott Cutler of "Ednaswap" and Phil Thornalley who was a record producer/engineer. Thornalley produced Imbruglia's record for BMG and it was his idea that Imbruglia record this cover.
Ednaswap released 3 versions of "Torn" (the last one mere months more Imbruglia's cover). The latter two versions were quite different-sounding. Obviously, Ednaswap was desperately trying to make a very good song work for them.

@FOTSOproductions you're too right ..
I'd also add that Preven and Cutler are not displeased at their income since the Imbruglia version!

@kpmmartin Right sound, too... the acoustic guitar in the Imbruglia cover softens the edges of the song enough to attract a mainstream audience. Of course, I'd rather have the snarling Anne Preven vocal and the crunchier guitars, but I'm not the target audience for pop music.

@TheRealAdamT .. right face, right time!

Poor marketing? Bad management? This original sounds better than the overly polished Imbruglia version and actually has a personality to it. The ironic thing is, they give this song to a cute little actress to sing, and she changes her physical appearance and style to be more like Anne's. I'll never understand the music business.
where did you find this version of the song? i can't find it ANYWHERE! (i even checked all the Ednaswap albums.) what is this version called?
