The Element of Doom details a mining company's plan to develop one of the last wild areas in the Midwest--the Big Springs Country in the Eleven Point and Current River watersheds. Documenting the company's abuses and its current operation in the Viburnum Trend, this is a story of bureaucratic power and politics. And the impact on the Ozark landscape and people. The water released from the Viburnum Trend mines and tailings ponds is cleaned up to the point that it contains less lead and other heavy metals than the natural waters that were flowing there before mining ever started. All people who access the Ozark rivers for recreation do so by cars. All cars use lead storage batteries. When the demand for lead and other metals ceases so will mining. Cease the hypocrisy!
