Actor Morgan Freeman being interviewed on CNN about his new series, "Through the Wormhole". He objects when the co-host refers to him as a "man of god", but agrees with her to being a man of faith — faith in science!

CNN, 6-2-2010

-----------------------------
transcript:

Co-Host: And you said before, Morgan, that you're a man of god. When you did this and some of these questions were posed—

Freeman: When did I say I was a man of god?

Co-Host: You're not?

Freeman: [laughing] No-o-o-o-o-o-o-o. No, no, no, no, no.

Co-Host: You're a man of faith.

Freeman: Faith. There's a big difference.

Co-Host: Alright, so, the question of faith leads us, most of the time, to a god. What is your view of faith?

Freeman: Questions of faith is whatever you actually believe is. We take a lot of what we're talking about in science on faith. We posit a theory, and until it's disproven, we have faith that it's true. If the mathematics work out, then it's true. Until it's proven to be untrue...

God is the universe you silly monkeys. You were created to think the way you do in his image. God is the sum. I have never understood why people don't see what is right in front of their damn noses. Stop looking for a bible genie and you just might find what you seek. Our knowledge is nothing compared to the sum of knowledge and wisdom. Word is thought and in the beginning there was the word. And God created the heavens and the earth.

You taught me a new term/word. I never really heard the word "apatheism" or "apatheist" before. That's actually an interesting view point to look up. I thank you for sharing this information with me, Albert Rogers. :)

"I know many professors of science who believe in God"

No doubt. But the more brilliant the class of scientists you sample, the fewer believe in God. Also, there is a spectrum from biologists to mathematicians, where the biologists are the least likely to believe. They are the closest to the sufferings of the animal world, which tend to refute the beneficence that is God's most desirable alleged attribute. It applied even in Darwin's time. Kelvin was Christian, but Darwin gradually abandoned it.

We blame, not God, but those who adhere to the beliefs of ancient, ignorant folk.

The Bible is very good at predicting what has already happened, useless at predicting the future.

The most important prediction of all was reported as being given by Jesus Christ, that He would return during the lifetime of his hearers. He did not.

I do not believe he said it, but if He had really been the Christ, the Anointed Son of God, no prediction related to times later than that could possibly have been true.

You may be going too far A few more millions have died for simple greed, and the lust for power over others. On the other hand, Billions more people must die in the next 50 years than in the previous 50, because world population has doubled. That could by 1963 have been reduced, by making contraception more easily available. Religion in the US Congress has continued to suppress that option.

Bergzore, you "sometimes .. doubt that anyone believes in God." I think you'll like my observation on the millions of the faithful of Pope John Paul II's religion, who, when he was sadly infirm, might have supposed that Death would raise him to the well deserved bliss of Heaven. Instead, they prayed for his continuing sojourn on the Earth. It seemed to me thoughtless, or cruel, or evidence that deep down in their hearts, they know that death is final.

Would I tell people that this is as good as it gets? Well, Prince Gautama, so the story goes (it's more plausible than the Bethlehem one) looked around and saw how everybody dies, their loved ones mourn, and in general life is as bad as you describe. He concluded that the ideal thing, rather than eternally coming back to life to die again, was Nirvana - nothingness. The rest you should look up at a proper Buddhist website.

There is already, even, a religion that I'm pretty sure can be called apatheist. I have the impression that to the Buddhist, the existence of God, or not, does not matter. Possibly the prayer wheels in the Himalaya are not consistent with Gautama's teaching. He is said to have rejected any accusation that he was God, or even a Prophet.
