What makes the shell game so good is that the pea is small. I saw a video of a kid trying to do it with a huge paper ball a few days ago.
Needless to say, it was a fail.

Saw a team of 3 or 4 people working the shell game on a CTA train in Chicago a while back. Cleaned a couple of tourists out of $200 in just a couple of minutes.

Excuse me, but I have the exact version of this trick that is featured in the link you have. I've tried to perform this on a close-up pad, but the shells "stick" to the pad, due to the rough edges. I don't want to ruin the shells, but can I sandpaper them so they can move smoothly across the pad?

@KataclysmKat a fine-grain sandpaper or nail file will work perfectly for that.
