Meet Fudge, our family pet hamster.

Fudge is a Syrian hamster and about 1 year old. Ever since he came to live with us, he runs on the outside of his wheel... well he trys to, sometimes he falls off the back and when he reaches the top he jumps off to start again.

After the first few cmments, I realise that the wheel is too small and that is why Fudge is clever enough to figure out that for some comfortable exercise, he runs on the outside of the wheel.

  • Your running wheel seems to be much to small. A Syrian hamster needs one of 11 inches in diametre. Please watch my vids about fairly hamster care on my channel for more information!

  • @ALXDO1 - thanks for the same advice as the first two commentors.. as you may notice I have already mentioned I shall be doing something about a bigger wheel for Fudge.

  • @stop4stuff Sorry, but I didn´t see that!

  • @ALXDO1 - From your channel, I see you have a keen interest in hamsters... what would your opinion on a ramped treadmill (flat surface) be for a hamster's exercise needs?

  • The hamster is not mad, it's the hamster toy manufactures who fail because they make wheels that are too small for adult hamsters! If the hamster has to arch his back to be in the wheel, it is uncomfortable for him & he looks for other ways to use the wheel because he still has his natural urge to run (in nature he would run several miles per night!). It's sad, because in a big wheel (min. 8 inches) a hamster can run so much faster, it's amazing to watch & a great way to keep him busy & healthy.

  • @evuchka1 - Thanks for the tip, I'll see what I can do about a bigger wheel for Fudge.

  • @stop4stuff I have no own experience with those, but as I am active in web-forums about hamsters I from time to time heard that hamsters, especially at the beginning, cannot handle the centrifugal force and get thrown out of the platform. Also it needs a lot of rare space in your cage.

  • @stop4stuff That's lovely i'm sure he does! I'm happy that you will! I bet Fudge will be happier too :)!!

  • @AwayLemonade - Thanks. He's got a great personality, friendly when he wants to be, but quite independant - more cat like really. I'll see what I can do for him about a bigger wheel.

  • some hamsters will do anything to be different

  • Fudge is a cute Syrian hammy, he's only doing that because his/her wheel is too small~
