I'm not into church anymore, but this place is really nice! I was curious about Falwell's church, so when I was passing through Lynchburg, VA on July 1, 2009, I decided to pay Thomas Road Baptist Church a visit.
http://home.trbc.org

Started in 1956 by a group of 35, including Jerry Falwell, Thomas Road now claims over 24,000 members. In 1971 it founded Lynchburg Baptist College, now known as Liberty University, as well as Liberty Christian Academy (known as Lynchburg Christian Academy until it moved and was renamed in 2005). Until 2004 the church was the location for a nationally syndicated religious broadcast known as the Old-Time Gospel Hour. This program now airs only locally in the church's hometown. Selected sermons from the pulpit of the Thomas Road Baptist Church are now featured nationally on a syndicated program from Liberty University known as "Live from Liberty."

The church occupied a new multi-million dollar facility on July 2, 2006. The new building is connected to an over 800,000 sq ft (74,000 m2). facility formerly owned and operated by the Ericsson electronics manufacturer. The existing building has been renovated to house offices, university classes, the new Liberty University School of Law, and the Liberty Christian Academy. The church has constructed a 200,000+ sq. ft., $20 million facility adjacent to the existing building which includes a new sanctuary, wedding chapel, and children's area.[citation needed] The Church offers a variety of events and speakers, including events such as a creationist conference by Answers in Genesis.

Founding pastor Falwell served as its senior pastor until his death in 2007. In a special business meeting called by the board of deacons on June 3, 2007, Jonathan Falwell was unanimously elected by the congregation to assume his father's duties as senior pastor of the church. Jonathan Falwell had previously served as the church's executive pastor since 1994.

  • If you are a Liberty Student, and love preaching, then you might be interested to know that Paul Washer and HeartCry Missionary Society is coming to a church near you. (Roanoke, VA)

  • That's cool! I was just in VA - 45 miles away from Roanoke. Not there anymore. I'm in NC now.

  • People need to stop hating on all of this. All of the extra stuff is for the UNIVERSITY, not just the church. I live 5 minutes from liberty and havent even taken the time to see some of this stuff. Good video

  • Thanks. People who haven't been there and seen it for themselves don't understand that. And maybe it's my fault for not explaining well enough that the other stuff is for the University? If that's the case, I apologize to everyone - and to the church as well.

  • You do realize that there is a whole University attatched to that church.... you know that LU you kept seeing everywhere which stands for Liberty University which is why there are all those things there...Ice rink, football stadium, fitness center you know the things you find at ANY university ... just saying

  • You're right. I don't understand all the comments people left. They were quite surprising. Spoken out of ignorance.

  • @cdmcowcam cool story bro

  • @lolraptourz I can guarantee at least 50% of LU students would say "Hitchens, who's that?"

People come and go. Falwell did, Hitchens did, Dawkins will, Graham will, etc.

  • @russh31 That's because Hitchens spoke the truth rather than preaching hatred of people he'd never met just to make a quick buck off of gullible religious people.

Except, oh wait, all sorts of fundies said all sorts of insensitive things about him both at death and as he was dying of cancer. So I guess your entire comment is just one big pile of derp.

  • @lolraptourz I'm glad that nobody at LU or TRBC was insensetive enough to say anything like this when Hitchens passed.

  • @lulle103 It is a University, the largest Christian University in the nation; fully accredited with a Law School, Seminary, and soon medicine. Was BYU or Notre Dame money down the drain? Besides, was any of it your money?? Just asking. How ignorant!

  • Really amazing...an entire institution devoted to total nonsense. Wow. What a waste of time.

  • @rumpwrestler Here's the thing, you have no evidence or reason to hate Jesus. He didn't do anything to you. In fact, if you affirm that He was a real person, then you must believe he died for you. If that's the case, then you really should be at His feet right now. No one could've made you think the way you do, but guess what, all humans will detest Christ because of our fallen state. I hope you can see this.

  • If you gave Falwell an enema he could be buried in a matchbox.

    -C. Hitchens

  • @dmarsh434 No silly stories??? There's talking animals in the damned book!

And I encourage you to actually bother to fact check Lee Strobel's books. The man is a shameless conman. Try even a google search.

  • @scweeks2757 Jesus say: "Easier for camel get through eye of needle than rich man go to heaven."
