God can mean anything, to anyone, it's the sense that there's something bigger and greater than all of us, that we'll only know about when we die. So you can take his music literally or figuratively, because it's got real human desperation and soul from a poor blind man in a post-slavery, racist nation claiming to the be truly free, and yet he still has a good mind, that lives on in every way, and therefore appeals to humanity, not just the religious. Truly authentic, unpretentious human spirit
