This is a New Testament of 17th century, net braided with a silver book-cover. This unique manuscript is not the only one that has been repaired by German teacher Margaret Yashke and artist Robert Shtehle.

Gayane Eliazyan
The Chief of the Restoration Department of Matenadaran

"For many years we couldn't manage to find someone whom we could trust the restoration of those manuscripts. It is a very principal work. But now, after many years of accumulation, we have a wonderful result".

This chance meeting was as if predestined. As soon as Mr. and Mrs. Yashke, who live near the Konstanc city in Germany, came to Armenia they started their hard work and became the sponsors of the restoration and protection department. From 2004 they are also the members of the benevolent fund 'Relatives of Matenadaran'.

  • @preachinshawn I don't know about you, but I'd give a leg to own a 400 year old book encrusted with gemstones and covered in precious metals. And I wouldn't care what it said on th inside. Just looking at it daily would lift my spirits!

  • Shawn: As you may know there are many different versions of the Bible, even in English. The more early versions we have to compare, the closer we can get to what the writers actually wrote.

6212: I definitely saw one leather binding with a yellow metal crucifix mounted on it, and one silver binding with integral crucifix.

  • I certainly agree...

  • religion is evil.

  • I don't see the point of restoring them when older manuscripts are still preserved, and it would be cheaper to just print new Bibles.

  • Is the one with the cross and Jesus hanging from it on the crusifix. Pewter, silver or embossed leather. Does the writing or speaking say?

  • Most of the ancient manuscrpts were destroyed during the genocide but againMatenadaran is considered to be the biggest and one of the oldest Institutes of ancient manuscripts in the world...

  • Arabs, Iranians have donated some of their ancient manuscripts to our Institute as well...There r unique manuscripts from may nations/countries there...Also in Armenian ancient mauscripts there r many remarks abt other nations,coutries...vey valuable for all historians.many foreign scholars, historians visit Matenadaran to learn more abt their own history...

  • By all means, protect those treasured books. Muslims would like to burn them.

    Islam is Evil.
