Peter Nero improvisation on Gershwin's The Man I Love on stage before a concert. Sorry for the poor quality but the stage lights were off and I had no idea he would play this. When he started I had two choices. Turn on the lights, or turn on the digital camera I had with me. I chose to turn on the camera. I tried to lighten the video up on the computer later but had marginal results. The playing still rocks though. Nobody plays the piano like Peter Nero. He can play anything. Enjoy!
You chose wisely.
Great sounds goes through darkness all the same.

First, define "jazz". When Louis was asked to define it, he responded: "if you don't know what it is, then don't mess with it". I left 15 years of wonderful classical training behind me for the freedom of "jazz". Yet, the debate still rages as to what it is. To most jazz musicians, it either swings or it doesn't. If the latter, then it's not jazz. Hope this helps. In the meantime, don't overthink it. Enjoy it for whatever it is.

Nero never seemed to have gotten the accolades he deserved. Very talented and original piano player.

I've loved Peter Nero's musicianship since I first became aware of him in the 1960's. His compositions for the movie "Sunday in New York" were so promising that I was sure he would have a great career writing for Broadway and the Movies. However, I love his performances.
