Otoplasty (ear pinning) journey: Dr. Sam Lam , plastic surgeon of Dallas, shows a patient of his one day after otoplasty or cosmetic ear pinning to show how minor the recovery can be. For more information, please visit www.lamfacialplastics.com.

Protuberant ears can be a devastating aesthetic deformity, especially for the maturing child subject to the ridicule of his or her peers. A simple and straightforward procedure, known in medical lingo as otoplasty, can return the ears to their natural orientation and configuration. Two principal pathologies may exist in isolation or in combination. A "lop-ear deformity" refers to the absence of an ear-cartilage fold known as the antihelix (the smaller curved, inner ridge of the ear that parallels the outer curve of the ear.) This type of deformity presents as an abnormally shaped ear that tends to flop forward. Alternatively, a "cup-ear deformity" refers to the exuberant cup-like cartilage bowl that resides near the actual ear canal that in turn makes the ear project out excessively. Surgery involves identifying the exact cosmetic problem and intervening in a targeted approach and on a timely basis. Oftentimes, ear surgery may be covered by insurance if done prior to adolescence.

  • Do they have to cut off any hair for the operation?

  • @EdwardFORever96 no hair is trimmed at all.

  • This is fucking bullshit. I got my ear pinned back yesterday and i have been in pain and discomfort. I have a bandage around my head which will last for another 5 days. My ear and head is itchy.

  • @ssnoopie this is a lop ear correction only. when i do a cup ear (see my other journeys), there is more swelling for 2 to 3 days. however, most other surgeons who do not regularly perform otoplasty like me get 10 to 12 times as much swelling as i do.

I just did and it went perfectly well. I'm very glad I did it.

It will hurt, that's for sure, but you why so why bother??? Wishing you lots of success and when they take of the badgages you just can't believe it.

  • lol

  • @laurixtumix the ears were surgically pinned back to be less flared out using suture modifications to draw the ears back toward the head and define a better shaped antihelical fold.
