Shoji Nishio sensei was one of the most prominent aikido teachers, 8 dan Aikikai, also very skilled with the sword and the jo. He passed away in 2005. This film is from a seminar he had in my dojo Enighet, in 1993. Notice his speed and virtuosity, and also his constant smile. He was a delightful teacher, always in a good mood, and always inspired. It was clear that he truly loved to do aikido. His sophisticated budo was not easy to learn, but we all sure enjoyed trying.
Here are photos of him on my website:

  • I met him in Mexico while I was practicing at Budo UNAM and indeed he was such a great master... my teacher, a lady, was student of him at Japan. He came to Mexico at least 3 times to perform exams and seminars.

  • thank you for sharing it

My first seminar I was on some months ago was structured like this: we were about 50 people in a sports hall. The seminar was on a weekend and every day we trained about 2-3 times. The sensei who organizes the seminar shows the techniques in front of all and then you start training with the others. So you are actually there to learn how it feels to train with people you don't train every week with :)

  • Hey, I read the german version of your book "Aikido - the peaceful martial art" and really liked it. It is great to get the philosophical aspect of Aikido and i can even use it for my Karate training

  • LOL, I now know that the students get to practice as well :)

  • During these seminars...do students only watch...or do they get to practice as well?

Great video by the way :)
