Mark Lipinski takes us on a different kind of door knock: into the press room at International Quilt Market in Minneapolis to put faces to the titles of your favorite magazines. First, he introduces Bob Ruggiero, who coordinates all of the press. He then talks with a roomful of magazine editors starting with Julie Stefano of Home Arts Magazine. Next up are Laura Roberts and Sherri Driver of McCall's and Laurette Koserowski, Executive Editor of The Quilter and All American Crafts. They agree that they are all competitors but are also all friends. Susan Fuquay is editor and creator of American Quilt Retailer which is just for quilt shops. Jean Nolte, Editor of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting, Jennifer Keltner of American Patchwork and Quilting and Quilts and More and Carolyn Beam, Creative Editor of Quiltmaker field Mark's questions. The main point they make is that they are always looking for new designs and designers. Mark then interviews Angie Hodapp, the new Editor in Chief of Quilters Newsletter Magazine. Angie, Jodie and Mark all are on the board of the Alliance for American Quilts. In answer to his query about trends she says she's seeing a lot of new surface designs. And the hot color? Yellow!
Linda Taylor is one of the pioneers and the biggest name in longarm quilting. Years ago machines were very simple and had a constant speed. Today's machines are wonderful with so many features. Linda puts the Gammill longarm machine through its paces starting with a traditional design and moving to a very untraditional design. Start by stabilizing the quilt by stitching in the ditch. This keeps the quilt together. Once stabilized, you can go anywhere on the quilt with freehand stitching. Linda's best advice is to have fun with it. She has developed tools to help with the process.
Jodie interviews Lynn Roddy Brown who has written Simple Strategies for Block Swap Quilts published by That Patchwork Place. In 1997 a group met at their quilt shop and started a bee to swap blocks for scrap quilts. Everything she's learned about scrap quilts is a result of trading blocks. You get fabrics you'd never buy yourself and then you sort by value or color. It's also a very efficient way to make blocks as it's best to have easy to make, simple blocks. Her book is based on what she has learned from her block swapping experiences. It's a guide for sorting fabrics, making blocks and arranging on the design wall. You're using your stash so any quilt made from the stash is free. You've already spent the money and you're not getting it back.
Jodie introduces Patrick Lose who announces that his Quilting Celebrations magazine has been so successful that two will be published by Fons and Porter in 2011! The magazine celebrates life's events, seasons and holidays with quilting. Then here comes Mark via Skype on a computer. He couldn't be at market in person but he joins in using technology. Isn't today's electronic world just fantastic?
