  • Nice video. I remember seeing the first problem in a book a long time ago. I think it was the first problem of "Tsume Shogi from 9kyu to 1kyu"...

  • @HIDETCHI Yes, you're right. It is the first problem from Tsumeshogi from 9-kyu to 1-kyu. I just got that book in the mail a few days ago (along with some other tsume books).

  • nevermind.....i didn't see the pawn cutting off that square :)

  • oh and nice video :)

  • sorry im new to shogi...but in the second problem... after you move the Dragon....or rook.... and the bishop/horse gives check....and the other player can drop a peice to block... and after the horse takes cant the king escape via 2f?? or f2? idk how to do the notation? lol. just wondering.

  • And yes, of course brinkmate problems exist. I own two books that feature them ("Habu's Shogi Games: Checkmate & Brinkmate 200" and "300 Checkmate, Brinkmate, and Approach Problems"). Hidetchi also recently made a video with brinkmate problems, so be sure to check that out.

  • That's a good question. According to the rules concerning tsumeshogi problems, if you have reached a position in which the only way the king can delay a mate is to move pieces in front of the attacking piece, without changing the way checkmate is delivered, then it's considered solved. Look at the Tsumeshogi article on Shogipedia for more information.

And yes, this came from a book. It's problem #3 for 9-kyu in the book "Tsumeshogi from 9-kyu to 1-kyu" (九級から一級までの詰将棋).

  • Ran out of room

I know that it can't be a tsume in 5 problem, as you'd have pieces in hand at checkmate. Did this come from a tsume book? I guess I'm missing something...

  • Thanks for the video! I have a question about the second problem - since it is not actually checkmate in one move, as white has the option of dropping pieces, wouldn't it be a brinkmate problem? I ask because I have a few tsume books and was thinking about buying a brinkmate problem book, but the second problem would suggest that brinkmate problems do not exist. 2 would be brinkmate in 1, but checkmate in 5, no?

  • me too. nice video!
