Romanians got talent
Good evening!
Good evening! (Bunã seara! in romanian)
What is your talent?
We are the keepers of the true folklore
and of the old romanian "doina" which is threatened with extinction
"Doina" is a uniquie romanian musical tune style
Lenuta and Teodora Purja: 40 and 69 years old
This is the old "Hora" (a type of circle dance)
There's no young girl to dance it
and to spin it
Here I try an aproximate translation of the song...
Translating loses the meaning of some archaic words.
Carter, did you drink wine?
That's why you drive the horses so slow?
Drive the horses faster!
Ai lai la, lai la lai la...
To get into the village where the sun shines.
Ai lai la, lai la lai la...
Carter, did you drink wine?
That's why you drive the horses so slow?
Drive the horses faster! (horse = "CAL" or "MURG" in romanian)
Ai lai la, lai la lai la...
To get into the village where the sun shines.
sun = "SOARE" in romanian
Thank you! (Multumim in romanian)
Our dear, we are very happy
that you showed us this wedding custom
I think that that is one of the most beautiful
I'm very glad that you came to show us
this small part of our folklore.
We are also in love with your voice,
when you sing traditional music.
Thank you from my soul! Thank you!
I say that (eu zic cã in romanian)
in this era when all means
Mega bytes, WIFI, electro,
we really need a moment like this!
Your voice sounds really special!
I mean,
I have never heard such an interpretation before
and this shows that
I don't know this area and it is a pitty!
And I want to thank you
for showing this to me!
I say YES from all my heart!
Thank you! Multumesc!
My answer is YES with admiration!
Andi?
I totally support the two ladies! YES!
Congratulations! You go to the next stage!
Thank you! God bless!
God bless!
You were extraordinary!
That's very good, but I'm sad I'm old
I wish I were younger to be able to advance!
But like this, I don't know how much I'll be able to advance
Comming back to the backstage,
we shake a little bit,
and like in traditional fairy tales,
we meet an old lady and her good daughter.
Bunã seara! Good evening!
How are you? Ce faceti?
1)We're good! 2)You came to visit us and take the grand prize?
Yes, we came to see the town, because at the village I've stayed a long

time
My name is Lenuta Purja, from county Bistrita Nasaud
I'm years 43 old. 43 ani in romanian
and I've came to this contest
together with popular minstrel Teodora Purja
who is my mother.
I've came here to sing an old "doina"
so that the youth from today doesn't forget
how were we the old people,
how I danced in the village,
and I don't want to forget them because I love them
and I also want others to hear them
We thank you for coming!
We wait you on the stage. - I also thank you!
And we support you! Come!
Good evening!
Good evening! (Bunã seara! in romanian)
What is your talent?
We are the keepers of the true folklore
and of the old romanian "doina" which is threatened with extinction
This is a good thing! We really need this!
It is very good that is kept, I hope!
Not that "doina" is threatened with extinction!
Yes Yes Yes, it is good that "doina" is kept, of course!
It is very good what you are doing!
And before we proceed, I would like to ask you
to tell us a little bit what is with the costumes.
I wear Dacian costume,
and my mother is dressed the same now.
How old is the costume?
More than 100 years old.
Wow!
Do you realise?
Ok, and in this evening...
In this evening we've came with
a fragment of wedding custom and old "horile cu noduri"
"Hora cu noduri" is an interpretation style very old
it comes from the times of slavery - serfdom
when romanians were tortured by the occupant hungarians
when hungarian invaders were whiping romanians on their backs,
the romanians did not cry, but sing
and the pain of the romanians was transformed into "hora cu noduri"
I saw that this style of singing is forgotten, dissappears
and since I began to sing,
I always tried to make known this old folklore,
very old, ancient,
which has entered UNESCO patrimony this year
It is a value of romanians,
and it's a shame to lose it.
The Romanian people has always been Christian Orthodox

  • yeah this gave me the chills too. I don't know why they are claiming it to go near extinct, because many romanians still listen to hora... at least the ones I know.
