This is my first ever try at making a video! This is my hometown Independence, Missouri. It is also the hometown of Harry S Truman and Ginger Rogers.

Independence is the fourth largest city in the state of Missouri. My hometown has a total population of 114,000.

Independence was founded on March 29, 1827. Independence also saw two important battles during the Civil War, the first on August 11, 1862 when Confederate troops captured the town, and the second in October 1864 which lasted two days.

Located in the historical center of town sits the town square. Along the square are numerous family owned shops surrounding the old main courthouse, which was modeled after Philadelphia's Independence Hall. This courthouse houses Harry S Truman's former courtroom and his home is a short walk away and available for tours.

Also located just north of the square stands the remains of the jail, now turned museum, which housed the likes of Frank James and Cole Younger of the infamous James Gang.

A farmers market is held on the Northeast side of the square on Saturdays mid-May through Mid-September.

  • This is your first video? I don't believe that.

I've just finished the first draft of a play about Harry and missed this video while doing research. This is perfection.

    Really excellent.

Wish I could have met the man walking the streets of Independence so I could shake his hand and just say "hi, Mr. Presient."

    take care

    Clay

  • Hi Clay, thank you very much for your kind words. I was actually lucky enough to shake President Truman's hand. We were on a field trip to the old telephone building in downtown Independence. As we walked by President Truman's house he was outside getting ready to go for a walk. It's one memory that I have treasured my entire life. :) Thanks again for writing.

    Sincerely,

    DeputyDoug

  • I grew up in Independence with many fond memories. I wish you could add another 10 minutes of landmarks like the town square, Chrisman High and St Marys. Just to see a video tour of Noland rd during the day...thanks

  • Thanks so much for your comment. I wish I could add another 10 minutes of landmarks and history too. I love my hometown. :)
