Rachel Maddow from 3/10/09 - Rachel interviews Salt Lake Cities former Mayor, Rocky Anderson about the new change to the liquor laws about to take effect in Utah. This is worth watching just to learn some of the current laws if you weren't already aware.

The Mormons believe a lot of nonsense, but they are right about booze, which is one of the greatest public health problems in the U.S., responsible for about 100,000 deaths each year. That's thirty 9/11's every year. Anybody who laughs about it deserves to get mowed down by the next drunkass driver.

Like so many people in this world, I have family members and friends who have serious problems with alcohol. I have been involved with many programs to help prevent drunk driving - and even take the designated driver roll often. Yet, I like a drink now and then. Because it is a problem for some people doesn't mean it should be banned - in my opinion. I do see your point but I think there are other thoughts on this out there too.

It's hard to believe, but there are still some "dry counties" in the U.S. where booze is not sold legally. I agree that lots of people like to drink and not all of them die early or kill anyone else as a result of it.

My main objection is to Rachel ridiculing the Mormons as if booze is harmless. Rachel should ridicule the Mormons' other beliefs, such as what they think about native Americans and black people. Those beliefs are provably wrong. Whereas alcohol is our most dangerous drug.

I guess my take on this was more the fact that they do allow alcohol, but have had these "rules" about it. Things like not being able to hand a drink over the bar or having membership in order to be able to buy a drink. If they were a totally dry state, that might be different.

Alcohol is a dangerous drug. But banning it doesn't work - as we found out already. Having laws that allow drinking, but not allowing certain things doesn't make much sense either.

The booze industry certainly wants you to believe that banning booze doesn't work. I imagine a billion Muslims might beg to differ - the booze ban in the Muslim world has been working pretty well for a thousand years or longer.

Outlawing murder obviously doesn't work either - check out the murder rate. Is that an argument to legalize murder?

And if booze is dangerous, why is Rachel joking about it? Rachel speaks against lots of things that are far less harmful.
