For the life of me, I cannot understand what the purpose of hand signs would be. And how could you possibly use those signs for fast pieces. But truly, I am at a loss as to what the point of all this would be. Is it for deaf people?

@organboi Good question! The curwen hand signs are a pedagogical tool, especially useful for teaching young children a song. When teaching by rote, you sing the melody and demonstrate the pitches with the signs. Then when the children sing along, they can watch your hand signs to see where the melody is going. Adding a kinesthetic element to teaching is often helpful. I worked with a children's choir that used these signs, and have seen first-hand how useful they are.

Thank you. I agree, this should be taught in schools. There are many music schools that teach it, but not enough.
