Jewels of the junta. Most of the world's finished rubies origiate in Burma.

It is well known how the proceeds from sales of diamonds or oil can subsidize civil war and corrupt regimes, but less well known is how the international ruby trade sustains the Burmese junta.

The United States and Europe each responded to Myanmar's violent repression of peaceful protesters with tightened trade limitations in their relations with the pariah in Southeast Asia, but were easily circumvented by gem dealers.

Outside of bilateral sanctions, there are no restrictions on ruby sales, unlike the Kimberley Process, designed to combat "conflict diamonds." Because the origin of any gem is often unclear or unspecified, most consumers have no idea whether their ruby purchase supports minorities, rebels, or the corrupt and violent Burmese regime.

Demand for the "fiery gems" combined with ignorance about their source keeps brutal governments in place and contributes to the suffering of millions.

  • Just shows you how far some will go to hide behind an object of beauty, and how apt its a blood red stone at that.

  • wtf you goofs be-leave anything you see on the tube this is an ad by the nwo to take more away from the poor, gemstones are rarer then gold and much more valuable, you want to save your family after financial calapse buy a hand full of emeralds and ruby's dont buy diamonds nwo will make money on them if you do...

  • We all should also know that the trade is not stopped because the rubies in Burma are not from Burma. The mostley of Rubies that are sold as Burmese are whitewashed in Burma by American and European gangsters that hide gems that belongs to tulkulamas. Dalai Lama own much of the gems and other tulkulamas. The gold, gems , valuable minerals and other treasures was stolen from tibetans in Europe and other places before WW1 and WW2 and must be delivered back and then peace will happen in world.

  • Cheap rubies are all over ebay they're filled with lead bearing glass. Or you can get pure synthetics advertised as naturals any stones offered by sellers with less than 500 feedback and 99% positive you need to take to gemologist for verification. "Ludyrong650" was kicked off ebay for selling synthetics as naturals. Synthetics are OK if advertised as synthetics shop around it's easy to pay too much they're grown by the pound, not by the carat.

  • Its odd the ban was only for Burmese rubies and jade, not Burmese sapphires. Burma exports a -lot- of sapphires.. you'd think the ban would cover more bases

  • The truth is the US cant get hold that Rubies and wanting to control that part of land so since they control the Media they like to make stories. It same like the Arabs World, the US wanted to grab hold the oil. No wonder ppl ard the World been spittng onto Americans food :)

  • sorry, how much would coast( in dollars) one of those rubis??

  • Burma(now Myanmar) has to be punished for its brutal regime .Right now, Burmese rubies, the finest in the world, cannot be sell in the US.
