When Dr. Light created X, his name was inspired by the variable meaning limitless potential and that he can be anything, it is also a sign of misfortune or an end. Zero was given his name to counter the variable because no matter how you do the math when X clashes (x or times) with 0 the answer will always be 0. Zero also is an absorbing number, it engulfs all numbers and can become anything just like X. This points out that X and Zero are true equals in the matter, making perfect rivals.

@skawt24 In Megaman X5, Zero was destroyed. In Megaman X6, he came back, and he mentioned something about his reputation being damaged, so I assume he was dropped from X6 - X7 & 8.

I actually think they should give more background story around Zero. I mean they gave him 4 games but those were put into the future. Give zero the 6 games we want from his point of view.
