If you plan on cooking anything in this manner.... IT IS A MUST... you have to prepare the can. Get it really hot and burn off all the galvanization coating on it. If you can get it red hot with coals, this is the best method. Don't add any fluids to catch it on fire.... you will be defeating the purpose.....

that was a galvanized trash can, galvanized metals give off a toxic gas when heated.
