i now see it like this: she's creting a kind of fable that evoques power, death. she talks about the rat feelings of anger and humiliation. the symbolic layer of the text is very rich. and she's obviously connecting it to the balkans, it is very explicit. i like the way she does it. it is very suggestive and leaves us a work of interpretation that can be very exciting.
i'm not sure if i understand what you're saying about a postmodernist response... tell me more about it!
