Bjorn, Benny and Stig wrote Ring, Ring for the Swedish selections of the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest. With the aid of their invaluable sound engineer Michael B. Tretow they borrowed some inspiration from legendary producer Phil Spector. The group achieved a sound that was completely new to Swedish pop music. It was the definitive sound of Abba! Neil Sedaka provided English lyrics with his partner Phil Cody.
Unfortunately the jury - a mix of celebrities, musicians and journalists - voted them only third. Abba's worldwide conquest would have to wait another year to commence. Bjorn recalls "We were really sickened by the result. We really were the best"!
There was no doubt that Abba had the people's vote. The English and Swedish versions of Ring, Ring were released as separate singles, and soon broke all Swedish records. With the Ring, Ring album they occupied the top 3 chart positions for 2 weeks in a row. Ring, Ring stayed at number 1 for 8 weeks.
This performance was recorded in Hilversum, Holland in June 1975. It was their first tv special outside Sweden. Presenter Eddy Becker recalls "Agnetha and Frida were shy and nothing like your average celebrities. They were like two friends or work colleagues, they encouraged each other and joked between themselves. There was no rivalry there whatsoever!".
From Ring, Ring album (1973). Lyrics:
I was sitting by the phone,
I was waiting all alone,
Baby, by myself I sit and wait and wonder about you
It's a dark and dreary night,
Seems like nothing's going right,
Won't you tell me honey,
How can I go on here without you,
Yes, I'm down and feeling blue
And I don't know what to do, oh-oh
Ring, ring, why don't you give me a call
Ring, ring, the happiest sound of them all
Ring, ring, I stare at the phone on the wall
And I sit all alone impatiently,
Won't you please understand the need in me,
So, ring, ring, why don't you give me a call
So, ring, ring, why don't you give me a call
You were here and now you're gone,
Hey, did I do something wrong
I just can't believe that I could be so badly mistaken,
Was it me or was it you,
Tell me, are we really through
Won't you hear me cry,
And you will know that my heart is breaking,
Please forgive and then forget,
Or maybe darling better yet, oh-oh
Ring, ring, why don't you give me a call
Ring, ring, the happiest sound of them all
Ring, ring, I stare at the phone on the wall
And I sit all alone impatiently,
Won't you please understand the need in me,
So, ring, ring, why don't you give me a call
So, ring, ring, why don't you give me a call
Oh-ho, ring, ring, why don't you give me a call,
So, ring, ring, why don't you give me a call.

"skirts"? It looks like dresses! :) Anyway, they are sexy in their cat garments. I wish I had one.

Agnetha and Frida looks so sexy in their cat skirts. Ring Ring is a fantastic song, but the swedish version "Ring Ring (Bara du slog en signal)" is better than the english version. Some of ABBAs songs sounds better in swedish. Well, I am Scandinavian so Nordic languages means a lot to me.

That's true in their early days Thomas, but it soon got too much for them to keep up with dual language versions. When you listen to Agnetha's early Swedish solo songs, the language doesn't matter - its universally wonderful!
