Hradec Králové lies beside the confluence of the Orlice and Labe Rivers in Eastern Bohemia, about 30km north of Pardubice. One of the oldest and most important cities in Bohemia, Hradec Králové evolved in the 12th century from a riverside fortress that stood on the site for at least three centuries before that.
The symbol of Hradec Králové is a rampant lion holding a large letter G. The letter represents the name of the original settlement Gradec; an archaic Czech word meaning the same as the modern word Hradec, which is a small fortified castle.
The lion with the small crown on its head is a reminder of Hradec Královés heyday from the early 1300s until the beginning of the Thirty Years War in 1618, when it enjoyed special status as a dowry town of the Bohemian Queens.
