Since my stupid laptop mic is being uncooperative with my attempts to make spoken-word vlog segments, I thought I'd try a little of the "seen but not heard" method in presenting my personal list of top three vintage haunted house movies, along with the theatrical trailers for each film. Perfect for the Halloween season... or for ME anytime of the year.

These films have several things in common: 1) they were all produced in gloriously atmospheric black & white, 2) they were all based upon novels, 3) they approach the subject of the supernatural with complete & utter seriousness, 4) they are as much about the ordinary people attempting to cope with these strange happenings as they are about the ghostly incidents themselves. It's quite clear that they're NOT of the lowly calibur of other cinematic spook fests, such as "The Ghost In The Invisible Bikini" or "Hillbillys In A Haunted House".

1. "The Uninvited" (1944)
2. "The Innocents" (1961)
3. "The Haunting" (1963)

Note: I would've also included 1946's "Dragonwyck" on the list, but while a haunted ancestral home is an element of that story, it's not a plot point which tends to monopolize the film.

  • Haha. You with the skulls . . . Too cute! By the way, can you believe I am only NOW getting around to watching this? Heh. And you talk about YOU being a hermit!

  • Yeah, me & those skulls -- we're tight, we're buds, we're bossom pals. Plus, I liked my hair much better in this clip. (Geez, you should've seen how incredibly vain I was about it when I was 20!) But yeah, I contrived this bit of nonsense because of the laptop mic problem. When in doubt, use sight gags! I did much the same in my "Evening With Boris Karloff" & "Barbara Steele" profile clips (for which I did all of the visual editing myself). I'm glad you found these exceedingly silly clips.

  • Bloody hell, must have missed this one! Oh well, even though Halloween's over its still highly enjoyable! Besides, who says horror is only on Halloween?!

  • Thanks, Aqua. Yeah, I had intended to upload several more offerings like this one prior to the end of October, but ended up getting massively sidetracked. So, who knows? I may just go ahead and do it anyway, because as you so rightly said: horror isn't just for Halloween. As always, I appreciate you watching & commenting.

  • great movies, great video

  • Thanks! Yes, they're very cool films. I might've included "Dragonwyck" & "The Ghost And Mrs. Muir" as well, but they're films of a slightly different tone, haunting though they may be in their own right.

  • So happy that you liked my spooky clip, Michelle. But yes, Nefer was the main attration, certainly that's how she thinks of herself. :-) I'm grateful that she'd allow me to show her off a bit last night. The last time I tried to do so, she wasn't cooperating at all.

  • Thank you, Sweetie. I purposely put you in there at the end, 'cause these are three movies that we both enjoy. Plus, I saw "The Haunting" for the first time on S.F. TV with YOU... "in the night, in the dark". Yeah, I was gonna quote that line before I had the mic problems, I was so frustrated. And I made a real point of trying to get Nefer in there. The last time I tried, she just did NOT want to be held. You know how she can be. :-)
