even the creators thought this was far too scary for kids back in the 50's, so they had him changed up quite a bit.

I agree but there is something about the face that is remiscent of Carrot Top - who I don't think is ugly but odd looking verging on terrifying.

Dont get me wrong the green giant commercial was not a total disaster. Later commercial did make him more appealing to kids, still I wouldnt want to see that guy walking home from school.

It wasn't a total disaster. Parents and consumers wrote to the company at the time asking to make him more appealing to children so that he would not frighten them. So they changed his 'Look' and even invented a 'sidekick' for him called "Sprout". The whole point is to get children to eat their vegetables, not scare them to death.
