http://www.ted.com In an intimate talk, Barry Schwartz dives into the question "How do we do the right thing?" With help from collaborator Kenneth Sharpe, he shares stories that illustrate the difference between following the rules and truly choosing wisely.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate. • First of all, the highest rated comment on this video is "What a logical fellow". Can we all take a moment to stand in awe?

Second, I can attest, as a high school student who has been in many different systems (public elementary, public elementary gifted, public middle, and private) that there is nothing more heroic - I don't use that word lightly - than teachers who choose not to follow the script. Those teachers have changed my life, and they deserve to be allowed to do what they do.

  • Barry Schwartz always gives good presentations.

  • There are no 'rules'...there is cause and effect. Be the cause that maximizes positive effect. A lot of work to be done here. A lot of practise and wok on insight before action

  • The future is here. It's just not widely distributed yet.

  • great talk

  • Faith can be substituted for wisdom. [but that is not so easy top explain!]

  • 'It's ok to break the rules if it creates value.' :^)

  • While this is a very nice presentation and quite a lot of it does make sense, the problem is that there are a too many people out there who doesn't find work and love meaningful, only personal gain even at the expense of destorying other people.

And what type of practical wisdom can you ask from corporations when they have become entities themselves and their sole purpose of existance is to generate more wealth for their shareholders/CEO's. Profits before everything else.

  • @BFDK Hey, I like this idea! "Bring on the system change!" indeed. :3

  • wow...

  • @tgseason12 sense*
