Furious Mattress plays at the Malthouse Theatre from February 19 to March 13. Watch the preview video as writer Melissa Reeves tells of the inspiration behind this thrilling new theatrical production.
In the heartland of rural Victoria, a backyard exorcism is about to commence. Else (Kate Kendall) has always been a little different, even a little difficult, but when her husband Pierce (Robert Menzies) seeks support from his religious community, what he invites into their home will take the very shape of the unspeakable.
From the brilliant satirical pen of Melissa Reeves, co-writer of Whos Afraid of the Working Class and the award winning film Blessed, comes this disarmingly hilarious and terrifying production.
Director Tim Maddock, with set designer Anna Cordingley (One Night The Moon) and lighting designer Paul Jackson (Happy Days), has created a world, where impossible events are rendered all-too-believable and unforgivable acts take on a disturbingly natural air.
So disappointing. Came down from Sydney to see it. The plot didn't know if it was a comedy or a tragedy. The cast did not achieve anywhere NEAR the intensity of violence the material deserved. And the farce of that ridiculous mouse costume that had everyone in stitches completely washed away any compassion you felt for Else. A real mishmesh. She was either possessed or she wasn't. Don't clarify it. *sigh*
