Fort Ricasoli used to defend the entrance to Malta's Grand Harbour. Now it lies partly derelict and abandonded. We do a bit of nosing around some of the buildings and the network of mining tunnels that used to form part of the fort's defences.

The stretch of land between Ricasoli and the sea conceals a complicated network of tunnels and small beehive shaped chambers which, in their day, would have been packed with explosives. As attackers passed over this expanse of land on their way to the fort, their progress would have been greatly hampered by the huge explosions set off by the defenders.

Filmed with the very handy, Kodak Zx1 Pocket Video Camera.

  • I hope you had a local guide showing you around. A lot of Fort RIcasoli & RInella is in an extremely dangerous state. When I had a wander round on my own last year I was warned not to go inside anything.
