You missed the point. Consciousness is a direct subjective experience. If you need it or not in order to function the way that we observe is irrelevant. The consciousness experience is there. So it's not an option to keep it or throw it out.

In order for your soda experiment to be meaningful, the taste would have to be different even though the ingredients are the same.

Ask yourself the simple question, "how can the firing of neurons be red"?
