I've got a 99RS 257 hybrid swap with BC 272 cams, never raced it, but I used it daily. My very similar noise has been increasing. I hear it from the valve train.

@Raceme54 don't worry i have almost proof of my theory..
i did an oil change and used STP flush, put in castrol magnatec oil and it's tapped ever since, had a guy that used to work at a local scooby-clinic say it's NOT the 3rd piston but the lifters, mine too clears up once warm and drive sound after, it was bad in winter being cold, took longer to warm, but as summer arrives it runs better already..
as i always say if it ain't broke, don't fix it, i wish i had'nt done my oil change now..!!!

it's either worn piston number 3, or big or littles ends going..
usually EJ20 get tappet/lifter tap, mistaken for number 3 piston, it's just due to low oil preasure upto number 3, a good quality oil pump stops it, and making sure the hydrolic lifters/tappets are warm before you thrash it...
but yours sounds beyond that..

@bigpimp347 well since it was just low oil pressure not opening the hydraulic lifters, its been going strong at 12,000 miles since this video

It is called engine knock, possibly fucked up piston rings. too much wear and too much rally car racing maybe?
